The monumental events of 2008, such as the inception of the IPL and Abhinav Bindra’s historic Gold medal at the Olympics, significantly ignited interest and investment in sports in the country.

This led to the not just the evolution of Sports Management as an essential aspect of the sports sector but also the commercialisation of sports.

Moreover, the rise of various sporting leagues like the Pro Kabaddi League, Indian Super League, Pro Badminton League, and others, has triggered a growing demand for proficient sports management professionals.

Along this surge, the role of sports scientists has become equally pivotal in enhancing athletes’ performance, injury prevention, and overall well-being. The need for skilled sports scientists in the industry is at an all-time high.

Recognising this significant demand, IISM emerged as a beacon in the industry. It was established precisely to cater to this growing need for trained professionals in both Sports Management and Sports Science. The admission processes for Sports Management and Sports Science at IISM are distinct and tailored to suit the specific demands of each field. This method ensures that the right candidates are selected to make a significant impact in the sports industry.

Admission Process for Sports Management

With the intent to select candidates demonstrating potential in the Sports Management industry, IISM has designed a comprehensive admission process encompassing two stages to secure admission.

Stage 1:

The Stage 1 of the admission process comprises a total score of 180. This score comprises three components: 80 for our online entrance exam Sports Management Admissions Test (SMAT), 80 for Essays/Caselets and 20 for Overall Performance.

About SMAT:

SMAT is an online entrance test to apply for admission at IISM. The test is specially designed to cater to a very specific domain – i.e. sports management. The test focuses on candidate’s liking & awareness towards the sports industry & their acumen for the business side of sports.

Through this test, candidates shall be tested on their aptitude in Mathematics and English, with an emphasis on their interest and knowledge about the sporting ecosystem.

The questions asked in SMAT cover a wide range of topics such as:

  • Quantitative Analysis (12 marks),
  • Data Interpretation (12 marks),
  • Logical Reasoning (12 marks),
  • Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (20 marks) and
  • Sports Awareness (24 marks).

30% of the weightage in sports awareness will be based on the business aspects of the sports industry.

SMAT-topics

About Essays & Caselets:

Aspirants pursuing Bachelor of Sports Management have to submit an Essay of 80 marks. The aspirants will be given a topic for writing the essay and the same has to be submitted within two days.

Master of Sports Management and Post Graduate Program in Sports Management students have to submit a Caselet of 80 marks. The aspirants will receive 4 topics over mail, each weighing 20 marks and it has to be submitted within two days.

Aspirants would be assessed on the basis of Overall Performance including academic scores, sports achievements & extra-curricular activities. The candidates must attach supporting documents of achievements while applying for SMAT online.

Students applying for Master of Sports Management & Post Graduate Program in Sports & Wellness Management, can also apply from MAH-MBA MMS CET scores. The student can re-apply for SMAT in case they are unable to clear the Stage 1.

Stage 2:

Once, the aspirants secure a minimum of 50% in the first stage of the admission process, the shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for the Panel Interaction round that holds a weightage of 120 marks. The PI round will be conducted online, so the aspirants can appear for it from their homes.

Online Interview

An aspirant needs to score a minimum 60% of cumulative of Stage 1 & Stage 2 in order to get qualified for the final admission and letter of selection from the Institute.

Admission process for Sports Science

For Sports Science, the admission criteria delves deeper into scientific aptitude, research skills, and a passion for sports and human physiology. Like sports management, the admission process follows a comprehensive two stage process to filter out the talented and deserving candidates.

Stage 1:

The Stage 1 of the admission process comprises a total score of 180. This score comprises three components: 80 for our online entrance exam Sports Science Admissions Test (SSAT), 80 for Statement of Purpose and 20 for Overall Performance.

About SSAT:

SSAT is an online entrance test to apply for admission at IISM. The test focuses on candidate’s scientific aptitude, research skills, and passion for sports and human physiology, ensuring the selection of top-tier sports science enthusiasts.

SSAT topics

The questions asked in SSAT for Bachelor of Sports Science are-

  • Logical Reasoning & Verbal Ability (20 marks),
  • Sports Intellect (16 marks),
  • Physics (12 marks),
  • Chemistry (12 marks),
  • Biology (20 marks)

The questions asked in SSAT for Master of Sports Science are-

  • Human Anatomy / Physiology / Biomechanics (20 marks),
  • Logical Reasoning (20 marks),
  • History of Sports / Acts / Laws (20 marks),
  • Verbal Reasoning / Verbal Ability (20 marks)

About Statement of Purpose:

In the SOP the candidate has to introduce their academic field of interest, their education background in sports, industrial exposure or coaching undertaken any professional, reasons for opting to make a career in sports science, long term goals and what skills they wish to learn from this degree program.

Aspirants would be assessed on the basis of Overall Performance including academic scores, sports achievements & extra-curricular activities. The candidates must attach supporting documents of achievements while applying for SSAT online.

The candidate has to score 50% in Stage 1 in order to be qualified for Stage 2. The student can re-apply for SSAT in case they are unable to clear the Stage 1.

Stage 2:
